EuroCup Women: Wednesday Review

NICE (EuroCup Women) – There was a big chunk of history for Cavigal Nice Basket 06 as they recorded their first-ever success in EuroCup Women after a dominant maiden win against Elfic Fribourg.

There were celebrations for the French side as they posted a landmark 80-55 triumph to write a new chapter in considerable style. Victoria Macaulay, Laetitia Kamba and Romy Bar all shot the lights out with a stunning 46 points combined from a fantastic 20-of-26 from the floor.

Unsurprisingly, it left head coach Rachid Mezaine thrilled and he stated, "It was important to win this first home game to stay in race for the qualification [to the next phase].

"We want to keep our destiny in our own hands and we were very aggressive and that was particularly satisfying," he added.

Also in Group G, Reyer Venezia jumped into the box-seat as they moved to 2-0 as well as handing Basket Landes a first loss as they inked an 89-78 victory.

Forward Ashley Walker produced one of the performances of the night as she put up a spectacular double-double of 29 points and 13 rebounds for the jubilant Italians.

The day had started with a pair of Group B games in Hungary, but it was the locals who were left disappointed as one of the tournament favourites Bellona Agu returned home to Turkey with another win in their pockets after Tanisha Wright plundered 16 points in a 69-62 success at PEAC-Pecs.

Just along the road, MBA Moscow are loving life in EuroCup Women. The newcomers made it two wins in as many games as they benefitted from a brilliant 22 points and 11 rebounds from Olga Gorbacheva who helped her team edge out PINKK Pesci 424 by 71-65. She barely missed all night as she made an eye-popping 89 percent from the floor.

Another team who are enjoying themselves so far this season are TSV 1880 Wasserburg who seem to love facing Swedish teams.

Following on from their big opening week success against Lulea BBK, they went to Umea and overpowered Udominate by a massive 99-66 as Shaylani Peddy caught fire with 18 points, 7 assists and 5 steals. The loss was tough on Latvian center Zenta Melnika who had 24 points and 9 rebounds for the losing side.

The night was wrapped up with more German success and also more history as Rutronik Stars Keltern chose the beautiful location of Ponta Delgada in the Azores to rack up their first-ever Regular Season win, breezing their way past Uniao Sportvia by 76-50 behind 21 points and 10 rebounds from Marina Markovic.
