Roundup: Dumerc hits a historic high with France

MUNICH (FIBA EuroBasket Women 2017) – It has been a hectic weekend as the countdown to FIBA EuroBasket Women 2017 continues and it was a special one for Celine Dumerc who became the most capped player for Les Bleues.

Dumerc cements her legendary status
Having announced that she will retire when the curtain falls on The Final Round in Czech Republic, Dumerc will hang up her basketball shoes with a record number of appearances for her country, climbing to the top spot over the weekend.

It was cap number 255 which took her into pole position, as she passed the previous record holder Paoline Ekambi. France beat Montenegro 66-60 thanks to a rapid start and a smart 13-point shooting effort from Marine Johannes.

Palau on the rise
Another legendary playmaker who is ending her international career at FIBA EuroBasket Women 2017 is Laia Palau. She also registered an important landmark after moving past Marina Ferragut into second place in the All-Time appearance list of Spain with 254 caps.

That came as Spain completed two wins in Belgium, with Alba Torrens dropping 19 points in a 69-59 success, which was followed by a massive 87-48 win, as this time Marta Xargay racked up a 19-point haul.

Maltsi erupts as Greece share spoils with Italy
FIBA EuroBasket Women 2009 MVP Evanthia Maltsi rolled back the years to help Greece go 1-1 in their double header against Italy. The veteran guard poured in 20 points as her side collected an impressive 70-56 victory.

At the opposite end of the career spectrum, rising star Cecilia Zandalasini is preparing to make her debut at the Final Round and she warmed up by amassing a superb 24 points as Italy extracted revenge with a 70-59 triumph.

Prince returns for Russia as Vasin goes 11 in a row
Epiphanny Prince made her return to the Russia national team set-up as the naturalized guard helped her team to accumulate a second win against Turkey.

After a decisive basket by Maria Vadeeva secured a narrow 59-58 success in the opening meeting on Friday night, Russia then soared past the visitors 69-52 in a result which handed head coach Alexander Vasin an 11th straight win at the helm as he extended his unblemished record.

Kulichova scare as Czechs fall to Slovak Republic
Petra Kulichova sustained a painful knee injury as Czech Republic were handed a shock 73-51 defeat by their neighbors Slovak Republic in the first of a derby double. The center is adamant that while a concern, she will have time to recover. The second game between both nations was played behind closed doors at the request of the hosts.

Latvia edge Belarus in charity match-up
Anete Steinberga accumulated 18 points as Latvia beat Belarus 73-66 in the traditional ‘Pink Ribbon Game’ to support cancer awareness.

The other meeting between the nations ended in a 60-60 draw after the respective coaches mutually agreed not to put the players through overtime.

Hungary cruise past Croatia
As they finally prepare to welcome Courtney Vandersloot, things are looking up for Hungary and their head coach Stefan Svitek after easing their way past Croatia twice in 24 hours. Zsofia Simon had 15 points and 9 rebounds in a 68-57 win, while they also claimed an eye-popping 113-53 victory behind 18 points from Dora Nagy.
