Competition System

 

This page provides a comprehensive overview of the Competition System of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

GROUP PHASE - 1ST ROUND
  • AUGUST 25 - 30

    8 GROUPS OF 4 TEAMS

    Every team plays against the three other teams in its group for a total of 48 games (3 games per team, 6 games per group).

    * The first games of Groups A and B (A1 & B1) will be played at the Philippine Arena in Manila, Philippines.

    The top two teams from each group will qualify for the 2nd Round.
    The bottom two teams from each group will play the Classification Round for places 17-32.

  • AUGUST 31 - SEPTEMBER 4

    4 GROUPS OF 4 TEAMS

    The results of the three games from the 1st Round carry over to this 2nd Round.
    Every team plays against the two teams in their group that they did not face in the 1st Round, for a total of 16 games. (2 games per team, 4 games per group).

    The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Quarter-Finals.
    The bottom two teams from each group are eliminated and ranked in places 9-16 according to the Official Basketball Rules.

  • SEPTEMBER 5 - 10

    Losers of the Quarter-Finals will play the Classification Round for places 5-8.

  • WHY DO WE PLAY CLASSIFICATION GAMES?

    Classification games are needed to establish the final ranking of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, which determines which teams will qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. A total of 7 teams together with the Host France (subject to FIBA Central Board decision) will directly qualify.

    PLACES 5-8

    NO GAMES

    All teams ranked 3rd and 4th in the 2nd Round groups will be classified according to the Official Basketball Rules:

    • 3rd in groups will be classified 9-12
      4th in groups will be classified 13-16

    PLACES 17-32

    AUGUST 31 - SEPTEMBER 3

    All results from the Group Phase - 1st Round carry over to this round.

    Every team plays against the two teams in its group that it did not face during the Group Phase - 1st Round, for a total of 16 games (2 games per team, 4 games per group).

    After these games, the global classification for places 17-32 will then be established according to the Official Basketball Rules

    • 1st in groups will be classified 17 - 20
      2nd in groups will be classified 21 - 24
      3rd in groups will be classified 25 - 28
      4th in groups will be classified 29 - 32
