Malaysia face Philippines, Samoa battle Mongolia as Div B Semis now complete
BENGALURU (India) - Malaysia completed the FIBA U18 Women's Asian Championship 2022 Division B Semi-Finals cast by pulling the rug underneath Thailand, 57-54, Friday night at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium.
Yun Jia Huey and Elaine Chong joined hands in the endgame to help their side complete the comeback from 15 points down.
Yun hit the go-ahead bucket with 1:07 left, and Lin was there to make their foes pay dearly for only splitting their free throws by going perfect from the line with a second left to ice the game -- and settle the final count.
Chong finished with all-around numbers of 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists, while Yun tallied 11 markers and 6 dimes as the two also made a mark on defense, combining for half of Malaysia's 16 steals.
Emily Tan Qiyi top-scored with 16 points for Malaysia, who are set to face another Southeast Asian neighbor in the Philippines in the Semis.
Gilas Youth were one of the two teams who swept their way into the penultimate stage, the other being Mongolia, who will be taking on Samoa.
Motivated to replicate their historic success in the U16 tournament last June, the Samoans entered the Semis after beating Jordan, 61-55.
Malia Jae Ruud led the victors with another all-around performance as she registered 18 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and a block. Kira-May Filemu contributed 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals.
Filemu was far from the usual as she shot just 35-percent from the field and committed 8 turnovers, but played a huge role in their third-quarter reversal by scoring five in a 9-0 run to head into the final period up, 46-39.
Ruud then came through in the deciding chapter, helping keep the Jordanians at bay that saw them establish a distance as far as 11 points.
Phoena Dadson had 20 points and 11 steals to lead Jordan, who will face Thailand in the Classification 5-6 on Saturday -- right before the Semis.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong finished in seventh place after dealing Maldives an 88-25 beatdown of Maldives in the classification match.
Wing Yiu Kong led the way with an impressive line of 22 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, 9 steals, and 3 blocks with an efficiency rating of 38.
Choi Man Huen provided 15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 6 steals for Hong Kong, who collected a total of 32 steals as a whole.
Aishath Inasha had 10 points and 19 rebounds to lead Maldives.
