Top-5 performers during the Group Phase of AfroBasket 2021

 

KIGALI (Rwanda) - The Group Phase of the 30th AfroBasket holding at the Kigali Arena in Rwanda has come and gone but one we will not let pass by is to identify some players who played key roles in the advancement of their national teams.

FIBA.basketball brings you five notable players among the lots in no particular order.

We made a deliberate effort to spread the reach in picking these great performers but we can not resist the performance of four players whose teams gained direct qualification to the quarter finals with just one player making the list outside of such list.

DHIEU ABWOK DEING 

Youngster Dhieu Abwok Deing of South Sudan has been outstanding in the two Group D games his country played against Senegal and Uganda.

The 20-year-old University of Texas undergraduate was spectacular for his country in their last group game against fellow East African nation, Uganda on Sunday night scoring 22 points, grabbing three rebounds and dished out five assist to help his team to an 88-86.

Young Deing averages 19.5, points three rebounds and three assists per game. 

WALTER 'EDY'TAVARES 

Walter Tavares, the big-man from Cape Verde has been a delight to watch since the beginning of the AfroBasket 2021 as he continues to push the Islanders forward.

The 29-year-old Real Madrid center averaged 14.3 points, 14 rebounds and a tournament-high four blocks in three Group Phase games. 

Tavares posted his second double-double figure of 14 points and 14 rebound to help his side overcome host Rwanda by 82-74 points in front of their a near capacity filled arena last Saturday.

Matt Costello of Cote D'Ivoire justifies his inclusion on the roster of the 'Elephants' with his superb performances so far which saw his country winning all their Group C games against former champion Nigeria, Mali and Kenya to gain direct ticket to the Quarter-Finals of the championship.

The Baskonia SAD' center averaged 19. points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game the former African champions await their Quarter-Finals opponent

MAKRAM BEN ROMDHANE.

Ever reliable forward Makram Ben Romdhane has always come to the party for his country Tunisia with superlative performance on the court.

Romdhane who has recently signed for Benfica in the Portuguese league average 13.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game as the North African side remain determined to retain the AfroBasket title they won four years ago on home soil.

 GORGUI DIENG

The 2.11cm (6ft 10in) Atlanta Hawks power forward Gorgui Dieng is not new to the big stage, having sported his country's jersey colours for several years now.

Dieng gabbed a double-double of 17 points, 10 rebound with an efficiency rating of 25 when the Lions defeated Cameroon by 98-65 points. He has averaged 17.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assist per game as the Senegalese's search for the top podium continues.
