Spain roll past Turkey into Final, set date with France for second crown

DEBRECEN (Hungary) - Spain cruised into the Final of the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2023 with a 83-51 blowout of Turkey to set up a date with France as the Spaniards attempt to win their second world junior crown.

Spain reached the title game for the second time in history following their 94-87 win over United States in 1999. Jordi Rodriguez led the way with 20 points while Izan Almansa had 17 points for the winners.

Turkey could not avenge their loss to Spain in the Final of the FIBA U18 European Championship 2022. Karahan Efeoglu scored 12 points in the loss.

Before Spain and France face off in Sunday's Final, Turkey will take on United States in the 3rd Place Game. Turkey are hoping for their second podium finish after third place in 2015.

Turning point: Spain had built a 12-point lead in the first quarter and Turkey trimmed it to five points. But the Spanish mounted a 17-4 run to surge ahead 39-21. Turkey did not get closer than 16 points the rest of the way.

Game hero: Izan Almansa scored 10 of his 17 points in the first 7 minutes of the game as Spain led by 12 points. He also picked up 8 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Stats don't lie: Spain shot 50 percent for the game and out-rebounded Turkey 49-24, including 17 offensive rebounds. Spain also held them to 36 percent from long range.

They said: "We knew that they would try to play hard and would try to beat us after what we did last year. But we had a very clear gameplan and that was to play very hard defense and run as much as possible and play together on offense and share the ball. I think that were great at executing the game plan and we won," Spain center Izan Almansa

"We played as a team and when we play as a team we have a good chance to win the game," Spain guard Sergio De Larrea
