Turkey make history, set up Final date with USA

ZARAGOZA (2016 FIBA U17 World Championship) - Turkey reached another milestone in their basketball history by advancing to the Final of the 2016 FIBA U17 World Championship where they will take on the undefeated three-time reigning champions United States.

Onuralp Bitim had a game-high 23 points and Ahmed Can Duran went for 18 points and 14 rebounds as tournament debutants Turkey overcame hosts Spain 83-79 in overtime. Mert Konuk added 12 points and Eray Akyuz chipped in 10 points as the Turks prevailed despite a 3-of-16 (19 percent) performance from three-point range and going 16-of-32 (50 percent) from the free-throw line.

Spain got 20 points and 11 rebounds from Sergi Martinez while Miguel Gonzalez had 15 points but missed the end of regulation and overtime with an injury. Turkey came back from a 15-point deficit and were helped by forcing 22 Spanish turnovers. Turkey needed a Bitim tip-in with three seconds left to send the game to overtime. It was the second straight U17 Worlds that Spain lost in the Semis in overtime, falling in 2014 to Australia.

Turkey represent the last team standing in the way of four straight undefeated title runs for the USA, who took care of business in the Semi-Finals against Lithuania with a 98-70 victory. Markus Howard paced the Americans with 16 points while four others also scored in double figures including Collin Sexton and Gary Trent Jr. who had 15 points each. Ignas Sargiunas was the only Lithuanian to reach double digits in points with 15.

In Classification 5-8 action, Canada celebrated their Canada Day with a blowout victory over Australia as RJ Barrett scored 23 points while Ignas Brazdeikis had 18 points and Danilo Djuricic tallied 17 points in the win. Sam Froling collected 12 points and nine rebounds in the loss for the Australians.

Canada's opponent in the Classification 5-6 will be France, who rolled past Korea 119-61 - getting revenge for their loss to the Asians in the first game of the tournament. Jaylen Hoard's 22 points paced seven French in double figures while Joshua Mballa picked up 18 points and 10 rebounds. Seomoon Sechan had 25 points for Korea, who will face Australia for seventh place.
