Five must-see U17 Worlds Group Phase games

ZARAGOZA (2016 FIBA U17 World Championship) - Every game at the 2016 FIBA U17 World Championship will have an impact on the tournament's final outcome. But a few of the games in the group stage stand out as tantalising match-ups. Here is a breakdown of five must-see games ahead of the knockout stage.

Australia's Isaac Humphries had 41 points and 19 rebounds against Canada in 2014

Australia v Canada - Group C - 23 June
The opening day of action in Zaragoza features possibly the most influential game on the final as Australia take on Canada in Group C. Australia and Canada both have high hopes in Spain as Canada finished third at the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship and Australia reached the Final in 2012 and 2014.

The teams have a history in this competition as this will be the third meeting, with Canada prevailing in both previous match-ups, winning in the group stage in 2010 (76-68) and 2014 (85-74).

The winner of the game could end up taking first place in the group which would mean they wouldn't take on the Group A winner until the Final - with three-time reigning undefeated champions United States the top favourite in Group A.

The Dominican Republic are one of six teams making their U17 debut

Bosnia and Herzegovina v Dominican Republic - Group D - 23 June
Another intriguing match-up on the first day happens in Group D with two U17 Worlds debutants squaring off straight away as Bosnia and Herzegovina take on Dominican Republic. These two teams are among six nations making their debut in the competition, the others being Chinese Taipei, Finland, Mali and Turkey.

The Bosnians come into the competition as the European champions and will have a certain pressure that comes with that. The Dominicans will enter the game as underdogs and it would be a dream start for the Americas side if they can pull the surprise.

There will be one other encounter between first-timers in the first stage with Turkey playing against Chinese Taipei in Group A on June 26.

Spain beat tournament hosts Lithuania in the Group Phase in 2012

Lithuania v Spain - Group B - 24 June
Just like the Australia-Canada game, this all-European showdown could also impact on who plays in the Final as Lithuania take on hosts Spain with chances high that the winner will take top honours in Group B.

The Group B winners joins the other half of the bracket away from the Group A winners - possibly the USA.

These two countries have squared off once at this competition with Spain beating hosts Lithuania 91-83 in overtime in the Group Phase at the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship. These sides also will know each from last summer when the host team Lithuania beat Spain 66-61 in the group stage of the 2015 FIBA U16 European Championship.

Turkey are ready to show their class in their U17 Worlds debut

Turkey v USA - Group A - 24 June
The USA will likely face their first real test of the competition against a strong Turkey team which will have made their U17 Worlds debut a day earlier in Group A.

The United States will still be getting accustomed to the world stage and may not be in top form so early in the competition. That might just be enough for Turkey to slip up the three-time undefeated reigning champs.

Turkey enter the competition as the third-place finishers at the 2015 FIBA U16 European Championship, losing to hosts Lithuania in the Semi-Finals 73-71 essentially at the buzzer.

Bosnia and Herzegovina will play in a first-ever global FIBA youth event

France v Bosnia and Herzegovina - Group D - 25 June
France and the Bosnians will enter Group D as the favourites to finish one and two in the group. And this match-up on the third day of action - and second day of games in the group - could decide who wins the group.

This game could go a long way in seeing how far France will go, having finished 10th at the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship and then grabbing eighth place two years ago.

The Bosnians, who will have played their first-ever U17 Worlds game two days earlier, knocked off France 64-57 in the Second Round of the 2015 FIBA U16 European Championship.
