FIBA U17 - Serbia knock off Argentina to top group, Humphries sets record

DUBAI (FIBA U17 World Championship) - Serbia knocked off Argentina to claim first place in Group D of the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship, while Italy beat Spain and Australia's Isaac Humphries set a new scoring record in a loss on the final day of group play.

In a battle of previously undefeated teams, Stefan Kenic scored 18 points and both Vojislav Stojanovic and Vanja Marinkovic had 10 points as Serbia prevailed 60-57. Lucio Delfino and Martin Fernandez both missed two free-throws for Argentina in the final 11.7 seconds and Maximo Fjellerup's three-pointer with three seconds left was off target.

Fjellerup led Argentina with 15 points and Ayan Carvalho added 14.

Finishing third in Group D were China, who eased past Egypt, 84-58, as four players scored in double figures including two double-doubles to improve to 1-2. Hu Jinqiu collected 18 points, 16 rebounds, two steals and two blocks while He Xining had 13 points and 12 rebounds. Fu Hao scored 18 points and Zhao Yanhao added 14 in the win.

Egypt lost their third straight game to finish last in the group though they expect to have Mohamed Abdelrahmen and Mohamed Elsheikha as well as Branislav Jemc back with the team for the Round of 16 game against Puerto Rico after they return from the U18 national team that won the FIBA Africa U18 Championship. Omar Farag and Raouf Elsafwany both scored 11 points in the loss.

The other top billing of the day was Italy taking on Spain for second place in Group C behind Puerto Rico. The loser would take third place and thus avoid playing the United States until the final.

Andrea La Torre picked up 18 points and seven rebounds in Italy's 64-50 win over Spain, who got 15 points from Santiago Yusta in dropping to 1-2 while Italy ended group play at 2-1.

Puerto Rico had already booked first place in the group before their game against United Arab Emirates (UAE) but the FIBA Americas team still eased past the host team 110-53 with Edwin Ebube leading the way with 20 points while Arnaldo Toro had 18 points and 17 rebounds.

UAE dropped to 0-3 despite 21 points from Mohammad Rashed.

Group B's biggest storyline was Australian center Humphries breaking the U17 Worlds single game scoring record with 41 points on 16 of 23 shots and 9 of 11 free throws to go along with 19 rebounds and five blocks.

The previous record was held by Heo Hoon, who scored 37 points on 11-of-22 three-pointers in Korea's 119-108 overtime loss to Lithuania at the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship in Kaunas.

Australia lost the game though to Canada, 85-74, as Jamal Murray scored 25 points and Howard Washington Jr added 18 points. Australia made just one of 19 three-pointers in the game.

Canada, Australia and France were all 2-1 in the group after the French beat Japan, 96-51, with the French taking top honors followed by Canada, Australia and Japan.

France had four players in double digits scoring, topped by Gauthier Denis's 24 points while Amine Noua had 14 points and 12 rebounds. Stephane Gombauld was held to five points and three rebounds in 13 minutes for France. Rui Hachimura scored 27 points for winless Japan in the loss.

In Group A, favorites USA and Greece had comfortable wins to take the top two spots, followed by Angola and Philippines. Six players scored at least 10 points for the undefeated defending champions in a 124-64 win over the Philippines, paced by Josh Jackson's 16 points, 11 rebounds and five assists while Markus Newman had 16 points. Jolo Mendoza's 19 points were not enough to keep Philippines from dropping to 0-3.

Greece took second place in the group with a 62-51 win over Angola. Vasilis Charalampopoulos had 15 points and nine rebounds for Greece and Antonis Koniaris had 13 points. Bruno Fernandes collected 16 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks for Angola, who dropped to 1-2.
