Maljkovic turns the page for reigning champions with new-look Serbia squad

BELGRADE (Serbia) - The door is open for the next Serbian generation after head coach Marina Maljkovic chose to bring in new faces ahead of the defending champions tipping off their title defense.

Set for a tricky opening test against neighbors and rivals Croatia, less than half the team that won the title in Valencia earlier this year were named in a 15-strong squad for the upcoming FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023 Qualifiers.

Serbia squad for the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023 Qualifiers
Yvonne Anderson Sasa Cadjo Aleksandra Crvenadakic Mina Dordevic
Masa Jankovic Nevena Jovanovic Ivana Katanic Tina Krajisnik
Jovana Nogic Sofija Olic Ivana Raca Dragana Stankovic
Visnja Stefanovic Teodora Turudic Katarina Zec

Some of the changes were enforced and not least via the respective retirements of the legendary Sonja Vasic and Jelena Brooks. It means there will be a strong onus on the survivors from the last edition to show the way.

Yvonne Anderson will continue to pull the strings in the backcourt, alongside Nevena Jovanovic and Sasa Cadjo, with forwards Aleksandra Crvendakic, Masa Jankovic, Tina Krajisnik also back - plus Dragana Stankovic who played at Tokyo 2020.

Of those who are looking to force their way into contention, Jovana Nogic and Teodora Turudic got minutes in the campaign to make 2021, while there are a number of senior rookies such as Mina Dordevic, Sofija Olic and Visnja Stefanovic.
