Opportunity knocks as champions USA reveal squad for Washington DC mission

WASHINGTON DC (USA) - Holders USA will head to the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 Qualifying Tournaments with a number of players looking to make the most of an opportunity to impress.

While the reigning champions will welcome back Breanna Stewart, Elena Delle Donne, Sabrina Ionescu and Betnijah Laney, the quartet will not be considered for action against Puerto Rico and Belgium - only participating in the training camp ahead of the event.

This, plus the absence of the likes of Brittney Griner and A'Ja Wilson opens the door for plenty of other contenders to stake their claim for a ticket to Sydney.

"I'm excited for next month's camp," said head coach Cheryl Reeve, who will have 13 players to choose her final squad from.

"We will have an incredible mix of veterans and USA National Team newcomers, which will be a great starting point for our preparations for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.

"The training camp and games against two very different opponents will give the staff an opportunity to put in the building blocks for the next few years as we look to not only win the World Cup gold medal but qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games."
