Spain seek reinvention as they go with an initial 16

MADRID (FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2018) - Host nation Spain have named the initial 16 players who will fight it out for a precious roster spot at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2018.

With head coach Lucas Mondelo stressing the need for Spain to reinvent themselves as they look to make the most of home advantage, there is still a very familiar feel to the 2014 Finalists.

Tamara Abalde Maria Araujo Belen Arrojo Queralt Casas
Maria Conde Anna Cruz Silvia Dominguez Laura Gil
Nogaye Lo Laura Nichols Cristina Ouvina Laia Palau
Leonor Rodriguez Beatriz Sanchez Alba Torrens Marta Xargay

The list is headlined by reigning  EuroBasket Women MVP and EuroLeague Women winner Alba Torrens, while the event will also be a swansong for the legendary playmaker Laia Palau.

Tamara Abalde and Queralt Casas are notable names in having missed out in recent years but now with a chance to get back into the mix. Meanwhile, for the first time in the past 5 years, neither Astou Ndour or Sancho Lyttle occupy the naturalized slot of the European champions.

"Every summer we reinvent ourselves and we start from scratch," stated Coach Mondelo.

"We know what it takes to win and that makes us a very united group - a generous group both in the effort we give and in the game.

"That is our great advantage - we are a team," he added.

Spain will face Belgium, Japan and Puerto Rico in the first phase of the competition.
