Canada stays undefeated to top Group B on Day 5

LEON (Mexico) – Canada continued their perfect play with another strong showing, this time against Dominican Republic in a 88-48 that put them on top of Group B on Day 5 of action at the 2023 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup at Domo de la Feria in León, Guanajuato, Mexico.

Aaliyah Edwards continued her dominance for Canada as she led the team with 6 points in the first frame, but Canada’s strength has been their full team effort which was seen as 7 different players got on the scoreboard after the first quarter leading 22-7.

The second quarter saw Cassandre Prosper tally 9 points bringing her total for the half to 11 as Canada shot 53 percent as a team and continued to lock down Dominican Republic defensively to lead 41-25 at the half.

Sugeiry Monsac tallied 6 points for Dominican Republic while Yenifer Jimenez added 5, but as they shot just 27 percent as a team and tallied 12 total rebounds to Canada’s 29 they could not close the gap in the second quarter.

Jimenez continued to roll into the third quarter, scoring 5 more points which would be half of Dominican Republic’s 10 for the quarter, but Canada’s size and athleticism helped them grab 2 blocks and 2 steals in the quarter to deny Dominican Republic a chance of getting close.

On the scoring front, Canada had Yvonne Ejim and Kayla Alexander add to Edwards and Prosper’s scoring to tally 23 points for the quarter while also having full control on the rebounding side and led by 30 heading into the last 10 minutes of action.

Maira Andrade added 5 points for Dominican Republic in the final frame, but with 4 Canadians now in double-digit scoring as Aislinn Konig’s 7 points in the quarter brought her to a total of 10, Dominican Republic’s rotation could not keep pace with Canada’s ball movement, power down low or transitions down the court.

Prosper led Canada with 13 points on 75 percent shooting while Ejim added 11 points and 6 rebounds. Edwards added 10 points and 6 rebounds and Alexander 7 points and 11 boards.

Jimenez was Dominican Republic’s leading scorer with 13 points and Andrade added 8 points in the loss.
