Argentina announces preliminary roster for FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2021 ahead of training camp

MIAMI (USA) - Argentina has announced their preliminary roster for FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2021 ahead of their training camp scheduled to start on Monday April 26. Gregorio Martínez will be their head coach and prepare the team for their next challenge in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Due to health and restriction issues at the national level, 19 players will enter the camp at the CeNARD (National Center for High Performance Sports) on Monday and will stay there until the 1st of May, when the first cut will take place.

The 19 players who will start the concentration on Monday are:

Laila Raviolo

Sofía Cabrera

Brenda Fontana
Candela Gentinetta

Argentina has gotten stronger over the years, they finished 8th in the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2019 and obtained the historic South American Women’s Championship 2018 title. The success has been at all levels as several young athletes who played in the past U19 FIBA World Cup 2019 in Thailand, which highlight future stars within the country.

The remaining players who will join the practices after the first cut will be: Melisa Gretter (base), Andrea Boquete (forward), Agostina Burani (pivot), Florencia Chagas (guard), Sol Castro (pivot), Natacha Pérez (forward) ), Macarena Rosset (guard), Agustina Leiva (pivot) and Victoria Llorente (forward), the last two mentioned surely joining days later.

There are several experienced names on this roster such as Melisa Gretter, Andrea Boquete, Agostina Burani, Ornella Santana, Natacha Pérez, Victoria Llorente, Macarena Rosset, Julieta Mungo, Celia Fiorotto or Diana Cabrera, players who have been a part of the Argentinian team for quite some time.

In the last group, Florencia Chagas stands out, recently drafted by the WNBA’s Indiana Fever. There are also other young players currently in the NCAA such as Brenda Fontana, Sol Castro and Lucía Operto. Other players from the U19 World Cup are Laila Raviolo, Sofía Wolf, Sofía Acevedo, Camila Suárez, Candela Gentinetta and the aforementioned Victoria Gauna, all with a good tournament in the recent LFB in Argentina.
