Mozambique, Angola extend winning streaks

 

BULAWAYO (Zimbabwe) - Mozambique and Angola extended their respective winning streaks to five and four respectively after beating Zambia and Zimbabwe in Gameday 5 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

Stefania Chizane was the  game's top scorer as she helped Mozambique with 20 points, while Avelina Peso homed a double-double and Cacia Antonio topped the scoreboard with 16 points for Angola.

The two nations are to square off on Sunday as they will battle for Group A’s top spot.

Meanwhile, Mozambique are comfortably installed as the leader and Angola are on their heels. And Sunday'a encounter will determine who will be playing the Final and be going to the 2023 FIBA Women's AfroBasket.

Zambia – Mozambique (44-103)

It was just another day for Mozambique as they put up an impressive collective display against Zambia.

As they usually do, they opted for a head-start and kept the momentum all through the game, only putting their foot down in the last quarter. But then again, they did not let Zambia slip away.

The game against Zambia was Stefania Chizane’s time to shine. The 179cm (5'10") tall power forward totalled 20 points for less than 14 minutes on the court. 

Carla Covane was the second most active player, efficient at both ends, with 3 defensive rebounds and 4 offensive rebounds, plus scoring 12 points. Alongside the two top scorers stood Odelia Manafela (11 points, 3 rebounds), Nilza Chiziane (11 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists) and Ornelia Mutombene (11 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists).

On the other hand, Zambia did not oppose much resistance to Mozambique.

Gift Mwamba, Priscilla Chella and Elizabeth Bwalya were Zambia's top scorers with 7 points apiece.

Angola – Zimbabwe (89-38)

Angola have also made the most of their time on the court against hosts Zimbabwe, making another loud statement about their intentions in this tournament.

Avelina Peso and Cacia Antonio, and Cristina Matiquite helped Angola claim their fourth victory.

Angola went to work straightaway. In fact, they finished the first quarter with an 11-point advantage (22-12).The gap kept growing and growing, Zimbabwe  could not keep the pace.

It was all Angola needed to keep doing things their way.  It started with Cacia Antonio, who scored 16 points. Avelina Peso produced a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

This win over Zimbabwe is certainly its weight in gold as they prepare to clash against tournament favourites Mozambique on Sunday
