Ferroviario de Maputo, Primeiro de Agosto face off in Final

LUANDA (FIBA Africa Champions Cup Women 2017) - As the curtains come down on the FIBA Africa Champions Cup Women 2017, the battle for the trophy will be between two-time champions Primeiro de Agosto and Ferroviario de Maputo in the Final on Sunday at the Kilamba Arena.

It is a repeat of the 2006 Final in Gabon, a game that the Angolan side won 84-76 and one that current Primeiro de Agosto assistant coach Jaqueline dos Prazeres Francisco remembers all too well.

It was her first continental trophy and the maiden title won by an Angolan women team but a lot has changed since then with six out of 10 trophies going to Angolan sides since then.

"Today's final will be as difficult as it was 11 years ago. We won it in the last minutes of the game. We have a bit of pressure because we are at home and want to win our third trophy," Francisco said.

However, when the two sides meet on Sunday, it will be a new rivalry by a new generation that wants to write their own history.

This is the record 10th Final for Primeiro de Agosto yet they have only two trophies to show for it and it is something that bothers them.

The signing of American-born Alicia DeVaughn has given them a new-look in the paint with the 26-year old 6ft3in forward adding massive experience to a front court that already boasts of Mozambican Leia Dongue and the Angolan duo of Sonia Ndoniema and Luisa Tomas.

Ferroviario de Maputo, however, have a response to this in Argentinian Veronica Gisela Vega and former Primeiro de Agosto forward Deolinda Gimo as well as South Sudanese maestro Sarah Chan.

Gimo who had a good three years with Primeiro de Agosto admitted that it will be an emotional game but she will be looking to win the African title.

"I enjoyed my time at Primeiro de Agosto but this is a new challenge and I am ready to do everything to make sure Ferroviario de Maputo win today," Gimo told FIBA.basketball exclusively.
