Shane Gibson stays optimistic of 0-3 Al Naft's playoff chances

TEHRAN (Iran) - The losses keep on piling up for Al Naft.

The Iraq champions absorbed a harsh 110-59 beatdown at the hands of Shahrdary Gorgan on the road Wednesday night, which kept them winless in the FIBA WASL Season 2.

"It was just a tough game," lamented Shane Gibson during the postgame press conference of their crushing defeat at the Azadi Basketball Hall in the Iranian capital.

It was their third loss in as many games in the ongoing tilt, but making it all the more difficult to take is the fact that it prolonged their drought in FIBA's latest pan-regional competition.

Al Naft hasn't won a FIBA WASL game since Game 2 of their West Asia League Qualification to Semi-Finals series versus ZobAhan back in Season 1. They lost that best-of-3 series, and Wednesday's loss meant that the skid has extended to four games now.

Gibson himself admitted that it's alarming to have fallen into such a precarious situation, for it makes their remaining assignments in Group A essentially must-win fixtures.

"It's alarming, but what can we do? We can just look to the next game and play hard," offered the former NBA G-League campaigner. "Practice hard, and see what happens."

Gibson served as a glimmer of hope for the team in the deflating loss, finishing with a game-high 27 points - spiked by four three-pointers - alongside 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

It's just his second game with Al Naft in FIBA WASL and the Connecticut native is looking to be of further help to a club that's been running into hard luck this season.

That kind of optimism is something he's applying to their campaign as well, believing that they could still turn things around and give themselves a fighting chance to reach the next round.

"I'm a competitor. I'm a champion," said the nine-year veteran, who's won titles in NBL-Canada, the Balkan League, and in Cyprus. "I would never say anything else. I believe in this team. They believe in us, and we're gonna play as hard as we can, see if we can get the job done."
