Everything you need to know about the FIBA U16 Americas Women's Championship

MIAMI (United States) - In just under a week the curtain will rise on the FIBA ​​U16 Americas Women’s Championship. The tournament will be held in Mexico, at the Fair Dome, in León, Guanajuato, from the 23rd to the 29th of August, under “bubble” format, following all the FIBA ​​biosafety protocols.

The top four teams will qualify for the 2022 FIBA ​​U17 World Cup for Women, so we will see a great dedication from all participants in the pursuit of the goal.

Here’s all you need to know about the event:

Who will compete?

Group A: Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico.

Group B: Argentina, Chile, the United States and Mexico.

All teams were qualified through the Nike Youth Ranking for each sub-zone.

Who are the reigning  champions?

The United States is the leading candidate to win gold. In the previous six editions of this competition, the Americans have lifted the trophy five times. Only Canada has been able to break the streak with their win in 2015. The two North American squads are on top of the rankings followed by Brazil and Argentina.

Where can I watch the games?

The tournament will be played under the “bubble” format following all FIBA ​​biosafety protocols. All games will be broadcasted through the FIBA ​​YouTube channel.

What is the competition system?

All teams will face each other in the group stage to determine the qualifying places for the Quarter-Finals. There, the winners will meet in this order:

1st A - 4th B

2nd B - 3rd A

1st B - 4th A

2nd A - 3rd B

The four winners will advance to the Semi-Finals and the remainder will play for positions 5-8. The tournament will conclude with the Final, Third place, and positions 5-8 games.
