The XXI FIBA Congress comes to a conclusion on the eve of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019

BEIJING (China) - The XXI FIBA Congress, that brought together delegates from 156 National Federations over two days, concluded today in Beijing, on the eve of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019.

Besides unanimously voting on a new President, Treasurer and Central Board members, naming Horacio Muratore FIBA Honorary President and recognizing the most successful National Federations, the Congress appointed the Nominations Panel and the Ethics Panel and adopted amendments to the FIBA General Statutes.

The Congress adopted a new version of the FIBA General Statutes with the key amendments aiming to support the development of 3x3 basketball, to improve FIBA Commissions, and to make minor adjustments to reflect good governance.

Approved by the Central Board, the three priority strategic objectives for the new cycle of 2019-2023 were presented to the Congress: Empower National Federations, Women in Basketball and Enlarge the FIBA Family by Secretary General Andreas Zagklis. 

The Congress also received reports from the organizations officially recognized by FIBA: International Basketball Foundation (IBF), World Association of Basketball Coaches (WABC), International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) and Deaf International Basketball Federation (DIBF).

The second day of the Congress included Breakout Sessions for the delegates that discussed National Federation Development, Basketball for Good and Mini Basketball and International Club Competitions. 

The FIBA's Hall of Fame Ceremony for 2019 took place in the afternoon, where 11 recognized world-class basketball personalities were inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame at a special ceremony.  The ceremony is available on our YouTube channel

The Congress concluded with delegates attending the Official Opening Ceremony of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 held at the Beijing National Aquatics Center, the former Beijing 2008 Olympic Games venue.
