Daily updates: FIBA U17 Skills Challenge 2020

MIES (Switzerland) - The FIBA U17 Skills Challenge 2020, taking place from August 18-23, features 16 national teams from across the globe competing for top honors.

While some teams qualified for the event directly, others had to go through Regional Qualifiers and will have a few more games under their belt ahead of the Global Challenge.

Day 5 - Sunday, August 23

The first double-digit score of the tournament brought Mongolia the FIBA U17 Skills Challenge crown in the inaugural event after an unbeaten run on the global stage.

The dominant Mongolian team raced to a comfortable 99-124 victory over Bulgaria in the Final, having also beaten the likes of Belarus, Turkey and Uganda in the Group Phase, Puerto Rico in the Quarter-Finals and Guinea in the Semi-Finals en route to the title.

Mongolia's Bolor Erdene Gantsolmon was named the Tissot MVP of the FIBA U17 Skills Challenge 2020 after posting a team-best average score of 21.8 throughout the Qualifiers and the Global Challenge.

Completing the podium alongside Mongolia and runners-up Bulgaria, Guinea got the better of Panama, 113-118, in the matchup for third place.

Day 4 - Saturday, August 22

 The stage is now set for the final day of action in the FIBA U17 Skills Challenge, as Mongolia and Bulgaria booked a date in the Final after exciting Semi-Final triumphs over their counterparts.

Having come through the Asian Qualifiers, Mongolia are now one step away from the trophy in the maiden edition of the competition after beating Guinea 111-119, with only Bulgaria in their way.

Bulgaria clinched a spot in the title decider by taking care of business against Panama with a 112-128 scoreline.

As Mongolia and Bulgaria battle it out for the top spot, Guinea and Panama will go up against each other for the last spot on the podium.

Day 3 - Friday, August 21

There was reason to celebrate FIBA U17 Skills Challenge success all across the world, with national teams from four continents advancing to the Semi-Finals, with Mongolia leading the way with a new highest score in the competition.

Having topped the previous best of 111 points in a 109-118 Quarter-Finals triumph over Puerto Rico, Mongolia set up a meeting with Guinea, who edged Italy 119-121 in their matchup.

On the other side of the bracket, Bulgaria took down the early favorites Belarus with a convincing 116-128 display, while Panama eliminated Spain 125-115 in the final matchup.

Day 2 - Wednesday, August 19

There are now eight teams left in contention for the FIBA U17 Skills Challenge crown after the Group Phase came to a close on Wednesday, trimming the field in half.

Having been in the shadow of Belarus on Day 1 in Group C, Mongolia stole the thunder in the second day of competition. The Asian side beat topped Belarus 112-129 to secure a 3-0 record with a competition-best cumulative score of 345 across the three games.

With Group C crossing over with Group D teams, Mongolia will face off against Puerto Rico in the Quarter-Finals. Meanwhile, second-placed Belarus will take on Bulgaria, who secured the top spot in Group D with a 119-120 win over China.

As per the Rules, the lowest accumulated score decided the three-way tie between Bulgaria, Puerto Rico and China in Group D, with Bulgaria and Puerto Rico advancing and China finishing third.

The other Quarter-Finals matchups will feature Group A winners Italy taking on Guinea from Group B, with the tie between Spain and Panama rounding out the Knock-Out Phase picture.

Day 1 - Tuesday, August 18

The opening day of action at the FIBA U17 Skills Challenge saw four teams emerge as early front-runners after posting perfect 2-0 scores to climb atop their respective standings.

It was a particularly impressive day for Belarus, who put their European Qualifiers experience to good use in Group C by posting a competition-best mark of 111 points twice in their wins against Turkey and Uganda.

These performances stand at the top of the TISSOT Fastest Times, including all Regional Qualifiers matchups.

The only team to match the mark was Puerto Rico, who scored a narrow 111-112 win over Bulgaria, but suffered a defeat in their other matchup of the day against China, who maintained their perfect record despite holding just the third-best cumulative score in Group D.

In Group A, a consistent Panama side topped Egypt and Thailand en route to a 2-0 opening day performance, while Spain got the job done against Guinea and Portugal to ensure an unbeaten start in Group B.
