Rwanda book FIBA U18 Women's African Championship slot

DAR ES SALAAM (FIBA U18 Women's African Championship 2018) - Rwanda have booked their first ever qualification to the biennial FIBA U18 Women's African Championship set to be held from July 29 -August 5 in Maputo, Mozambique.

Charles Mushumba's side has recorded an unbeaten  run at the FIBA Africa Zone 5 tournament in the Tanzanian capital amassing four wins in a two-legged affair over reigning champions Uganda and hosts Tanzania.

Rwanda opened their search for the title with a convincing 46-35 win over neighbours and arch-rivals Uganda before seeing off Tanzania 69-36 to take a 2-0 lead in the first leg of the round-robin tournament.

Inspired by US-based center Bella Murekatete, towering at 6ft, Rwanda dominated the boards throughout the tournament, an Achilles heel for their opponents who struggled to match her size in the paint.

In the second leg, Rwanda made light work of Tanzania 65-28 before completing a double over Uganda 42-34 to emerge East African champions with a place at the continental tournament in Maputo.

Murekatete, the best rebounder at the FIBA U16 Women's African Championship in Madagascar and a member of the All Star-Five, is expected to once again lead Rwanda's charge in Mozambique next month.
