Tahiti secures Pacific Games berth, Tonga survives

APIA, Samoa (Polynesian Cup 2018) - Tahiti relied on their fluid offense to dominate American Samoa with a 123-60 victory and set a championship match-up against host Samoa.

"We are extremely happy to qualify for the Pacific Games. We won the bronze medal in the last edition, and we want to improve on that placing," said coach Honoura Bonnet.

Six players scored in double figures for the Tahiti, led by Arii Meuel's 25 points. The Tahitians dished out 22 assists compared to a measly output of six by American Samoa.

Lynel Steve Siu led ASA with 20 points while Afimuao Nimoa'I chipped in 10 points.

In the first game, Marcus Alipate scored a tournament-high 55 points to lead Tonga to a 107-86 victory and eliminate the Cook Islands.

Tonga will face American Samoa for the final berth to the Pacific Games; in the group phase, ASA escaped with a thrilling 71-70 victory over the Tongans.

Alipate topped his 48-point performance in his last outing with another record-high for the Polynesian Cup adding 13, three-point shots in his historic achievement.

Obadaiah Paea added 30 points while Siale Bain-Vete provided a double-double performance of 19 points and 14 rebounds.

Teokotai Akania paced COK with 27 points and 11 rebounds while Ben Vakatini and Robert Carr chipped in 21 and 15 points respectively.
