Rising star Quevedo making her case

FERROL (2016 Rio Olympics) - Laura Quevedo is lighting it up in Liga Femenina and sliding towards the centre of the selection radar as she dreams of a senior major tournament debut with Spain.

It would certainly be a wonderful time for the forward to make a breakthrough, with a potential appearance at the Rio Olympics up for grabs.

Quevedo impressed at the FIBA U19 Women's World Championship last year in Russia and was part of the title winning Spanish team at the U20 European Championship Women on home soil.

She has since carried over that great form into the Spanish league and while the teenager may not play for the most high-profile club in Star Center Uni-Ferrol, her contributions have still made people sit up and take notice.

Additionally, while Spain have enjoyed some historic success in recent times, they are not necessarily deep when it comes to frontcourt options and that means Quevedo does have a chance of making a late run for inclusion. And, especially as she now has senior team minutes to her name after stepping out last November in the EuroBasket Women 2017 qualifying game against Finland.

"It was a dream to train with players like Marta Xargay, Alba Torrens and Silvia Dominguez - they helped me a lot," revealed the 19-year-old. "For me, it also helps that all the national teams from U16 level [to the senior team] play much the same way."

My goal this season is to continue as I am and to see if I can further increase my best level. My ultimate dream would be to play the Olympics with Spain if they qualify. - Quevedo

In order to play at Rio 2016 though, the Spaniards must finish in the top five at the 2016 FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament (WOQT).

Racking up more than 12 points per game, Quevedo has been thriving in her new role at club level and understands that, with others ahead of her in contention for the senior team, she must make herself even more appealing in coming months.

"When a coach gives you confidence and lets you do pretty much whatever you want, it makes it easy to reach a very high level," she explained in respect of her eye-catching Liga Femenina displays. "I have assumed the role of scorer on the team because it's what they asked of me and we are a very good group of players who never have any pressure.

"For me it is also important to defend [as well as score] and that is why I am also contributing on defense and in rebounding - as that makes me versatile. I like to do everything on the court and I like playing the small forward position most, because I am taller than smaller opposing players. I always try to take advantage of my physical qualities."

I hope that people who know me think I can become a great player, because it is what causes me to have the desire to improve. - Quevedo

Quevedo's next possible stop on what would be a fairytale trip to Rio is to firstly keep her place for next month's EuroBasket Women 2017 qualifier against Sweden.
