Miyem buzzer-beater sees France edge out Belarus and stay perfect

RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - France scored as the final buzzer sounded to squeeze past Belarus, 73-72, and make it two wins in as many games at the Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament.

Les Bleues trailed by as many as 12 but clawed their way back and claimed a spectacular win after Endy Miyem banked in the game-winner at the death.

Turning Point: Olivia Epoupa hit a huge shot with 16 seconds left to play to edge France in front 71-70. However, she then fouled Lindsey Harding, who calmly sang both free throws that put Belarus up 72-71 with 11.7 seconds. After France called timeout, Epoupa drove the lane, fed Isabelle Yacoubou who missed twice but Epoupa - at 1.64m the shortest player on the court - was in the right place at the right time as the ball came her way and, as she was behind the backboard, she passed it to Miyem under the basket for the game-winning shot that dropped in the basket as the buzzer sounded.

Stats Don't Lie: France overcame an all around average or even mediocre shooting display to join Australia in improving to 2-0. The French shot 26-of-71 (37 percent) from the field, including 3-of-15 (20 percent) from three-point range and were an average 18-of-27 (67 percent) at the free-throw line.

Game Hero: Who else but Epoupa who finished with team-highs of 16 points and 6 assists. She also grabbed 5 rebounds, including 4 on the offensive end.

The Bottom Line: After losing to Japan by four points on Saturday and the manner in which they suffered this defeat, Monday's day off for Belarus can't come fast enough. On Tuesday, they will take on hosts Brazil, while France take on the Opals.
