Opals to gather for intense training camp with eyes fixed on Olympic gold medal

CANBERRA (Australia) - The Opals will come together for a week-long training camp from March 22-28 in preparation for the Tokyo Olympic Games later this year in July.

Australia's women's basketball national team are currently ranked second in the world according to the recent update of the FIBA World Ranking. The preparations made during this training camp will be important in terms of continuing to build on the strong foundation that the program has constructed over the years.

As the Opals' talent pool is deep with world class athletes, there are players who have been plying their trade outside of Australia listed in the training camp roster. A total of 22 players have been called up to attend the training camp, including those who might not be able to attend due to commitments abroad.

"With squad members and coaches based around the world, we will have limited opportunities to train and play together in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympic Games," said head coach Sandy Brondello, as per Basketball Australia (BAS).

"It's an intense and demanding camp schedule but it's important we maximize this time on the Gold Coast to support our long-term ambition of claiming gold in Tokyo."

"I know everyone is excited and raring to go, so I'm expecting a high quality, competitive and successful seven days in camp."

The women's basketball tournament of the Tokyo Olympic Games will be held from July 26 to August 8 this year at the Saitama Super Arena. Australia were drawn to be placed in Group C along with Puerto Rico, China, and Belgium.

The Opals will also be playing in the FIBA Women's Asia Cup 2021 which will be held from September 26 to October 3 in search of their first title.
