One of the big talking points before, during and after the Games has been the unrivaled success of USA sports icons Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird. The two played as well as ever for the American team at their fifth Olympics and celebrated a fifth gold medal triumph.

Taurasi created a buzz after the Gold Medal Game, too, when she said, "See you in Paris." If she were to be in that team, a player that many consider the greatest of all time would breathe the rarified air as a six-time Olympian.

Two USA players Japan had no answers for in the Gold Medal Game were Brittney Griner and A'ja Wilson. Griner was particularly dominant with 30 points, five rebounds and three blocks.
Breanna Stewart was excellent yet again, too, and was named the MVP of the Olympic tournament while Wilson made the All-Star Five.

Dawn Staley, a former USA point guard who carried the flag at the 2004 Olympics during the Opening Ceremony, has been lauded for her performance as the Americans' gold-medal winning head coach.
It was a familiar feeling for Staley, who after playing had served as an assistant coach for the USA Olympic gold medal winning sides at the 2008 and 2016 Olympics.
