Guam tops Papua New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand stay undefeated

SUVA (FIBA U18 Women's Oceania Championship 2016) - After a 20-32 start it wasn’t looking good for a Guam team who was coming off a heavy defeat by New Zealand yesterday. A completely different team came out of the halftime break, outscoring PNG 20-14 in the third quarter and on the back of a 24-point performance by Shania Bulala Guam were able to pull out a one-point victory. Svetlana Arthur contributed 13 points and 15 rebounds for Papua New Guinea.

New Caledonia were on a high after a 39 point win the night before. Unfortunately, they came up against a New Zealand team that is out to make a statement. From the tip, New Zealand was just too strong for the spirited New Caledonia side. A balanced scoring attack saw 6 players in double figures for NZL lead by Jillings 19 on 8/10 shooting from the field.

The Samoa v Australia game played out much like the game it proceeded. Australia got on top of Samoa early and made sure they stayed there. The combination of sharp-shooting and hard-nosed pressure defence on the way to a 114-point victory, the Gems showed they aren’t here to make friends. Jazmin Shelley put in a balanced performance with 24 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assist and 5 steals.

After not being able to start their campaigns off with a win yesterday, both Fiji and Tahiti were fired up. With the home fans behind them, the Fiji women's would not be denied victory. Tahiti stayed close all game but didn't manage to outscore Fiji in any quarter. Losalini Katia put on a show for the home fans, tallying 16 point and 9 rebounds.
