New Zealand down hosts, teams make their mark on Day 1
GUAM (FIBA U17 Women’s Oceania Championship 2017) – Australia opened the FIBA U17 Women’s Oceania Championship 2017 with a 163-13 blowout of Tahiti. From the jump, Australia showed why they are a regional and global powerhouse. Turnovers and a poor shooting night haunted Tahiti throughout this game. Nine (9) of Australia’s ten (10) player ended the game in double figures, led by Meila Goodchild’s game high of 28 and Isabell Bournes 25 points.
New Zealand wasn't phased by the home crowd knocking off host nation Guam, 139 - 34. Guam played an aggressive defensive game but was not able to keep up with the size and quickness of New Zealand. The home fans should help give Guam a boost as they look to regroup and bounce back on Day 2.
Samoa opened their U17 Oceania account with a huge win over Marshall Islands 120-12. Samoa relied on their size and strength to dominate in the paint. Marshall Islands kept going hard until they heard that final siren, not giving up until the end.
New Caledonia put on a clinic in their 118-29 win over Palau. The inside presence of New Caledonia was the key factor in this outing. Palau did their best to match the size with aggression and athleticism but New Caledonia was too much. Eight (8) players managed double figures, lead by Oriane Qenenoj’s 16 points and 12 rebounds.
