Guam begin preparations to host FIBA U17 Oceania Championships

GUAM (FIBA U17 Oceania Championships) - As announced in September last year, Guam will host this year's FIBA U17 Oceania Championships. The tournament will be held from the 9th to 15th of July at the University of Guam (UOG) Field House in Mangilao.

In order to help Guam's preparation efforts, FIBA Statistician Educator, Trish Nicholls visited Mangilao to conduct a two-day training workshop for statistician involved with the championships.

The focus of the workshop was on the fundamentals of the game, assessing the current status of statisticians on Guam and exploring the latest FIBA calling techniques.

The participants of this workshop have taken their first step in becoming FIBA licensed statisticians. This is an important step because the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Pre-Qualifiers - which the Guam Men's National Team will be participating in -  require every game to be called by FIBA licensed statisticians.

Following the classroom and film sessions, the workshop moved to the UOG Field House for a Guam Basketball Association (GBA) league game. Nicholls monitored the participants putting their new skills and knowledge to the test during a live game.

The 21 volunteers who took part over the two days will be an integral part of the U17 championship later in the year.

The statistician workshop is just one of the many operations that FIBA and the Guam Federation are undertaking in preparation for the FIBA U17 Oceania Championships.

Stay tuned for an announcement regarding the championships later this week.
