Youth Leaders Basketball Cup launched in South East Asia/Oceania region

MIES - FIBA’s Foundation is pleased to announce the launch of the Youth Leaders Basketball Cup, a new project in the South East Asia/Oceania region which is based upon the 3x3 youth tournament model of the IBF 3x3 Hoops Final in the Antilles and the Young Lions Cup in Southern Africa.

Unlike the latter two, this project will be divided in two parts.

For the first instance, 15 chosen countries of the region nominated candidates to take part in the IBF Leadership Seminar. The IBF, in partnership with FIBA Oceania selected one of the youths from each country who will travel to Singapore from 22 to 25 June to take part in an intensive youth leadership training.

Participants will learn the ins and outs of organizing a 3x3 basketball event, complete FIBA’s 3x3 e-learning programme, participate in a youth leadership workshop and collaborate in running a 3x3 event for local youths.

The newly trained coordinators will then return to their respective countries and work with their National Federation to deliver a FIBA registered U18 3x3 mixed event as a national qualifier for the Youth Leaders Basketball Cup. This event will feature mixed teams of 2 boys and 2 girls.

The winning team from the national qualifier will participate in the second part of the project, the Youth Leaders Basketball Cup. They will travel to Bali, Indonesia from 7 to 10 September accompanied by the seminar participant as team leader and coordinator. The mixed teams will represent their countries in an international 3x3 tournament.

They will also participate in a youth leadership workshop where they will enhance their communication, decision making and leadership skills.

The goal of the project is to give the youths a greater understanding into how they can use Basketball For Good within their respective countries.
