SAN JUAN (Puerto Rico) - As part of its commitment to the long-term development of National Federations, the World Association of Basketball Coaches [WABC] is offering two Level 1 course in Puerto Rico.

The workshops for the eleven Puerto Rican coaches will take place in several sessions from July 15 to 20, 2019 and 22 to 27 of the same months, in the Nilmarie Santini Court of the capital city of San Juan. The courses will be in charge of the Uruguayan instructor Miguel Volcán Sánchez.

"We are extremely grateful for the initiative of FIBA to invest in the development of national federations," said the president of the Basketball Federation of Puerto Rico [FBPUR] Yum Ramos. "This was an initiative of President [Horacio] Muratore. Work is being done on what has to be worked on, which is the basis of the sport, with leaders, referees, officials, and players. In this stage, we are starting with the coaches. "

Ramos said he has been present at the activities and has been impressed. In addition, he clarified that each participant was carefully chosen by the FBPUR according to a global analysis of the organization.

"I've been there for two days and I think it's excellent, wondering what is being done, very complex and the participants are very enthusiastic," said Ramos. "A survey was made, the regions were asked, the Technical Commission was asked, national leaders and the decision was made to invite those eleven."

Pedro Nelson Ramos of the Technical Commission of FBPUR is the person in charge of supervising the activity locally.

For his part, the federation leader stressed the importance of this project, not based entirely on high-performance levels, but on the very basis of sport. "This is extremely important since we are working at the base, we are teaching how to train and not playing for playing and that [basketball] should be taught in the right way," said Ramos.

He also promised to follow up on the project by creating long-term FBPUR initiatives for his coaches.

"Now, once the courses for coaches that we are going to certify have finished, we will sit down with the Technical Commission to create a follow-up course for them annually," Ramos said.

The WABC will have two additional stops on this tour. In Ecuador (ECU) from 16 to 21 and 23 to 28 August. In addition, from November 15 to 20 in the areas of Quito and Cuenca / Guayaquil. And in the Bahamas (BAH) from August 19 to 24 at the Kendal Isaacs Gym in Nassau and the Jack Haywood Gym in Freeport Grand Bahamas.
