Vardarli Demirmen excited by Fenerbahce progress

ISTANBUL (EuroLeague Women) - Istanbul powerhouse Fenerbahce extracted some EuroLeague Women revenge against CB Avenida and that has left Turkey national team favourite Birsel Vardarli Demirmen delighted.

Making up for their only loss to date this season after going down in Salamanca, they returned the favour to their Spanish rivals with a tight 66-63 success in Group B.

USA national team duo Tina Charles and Angel McCoughtry were outstanding in the contest and provided the ammunition, with the former harvesting 25 points and the latter weighing in with 16 points and 12 boards.

"It was a very important game to finish the group in the first place," proclaimed Vardarli Demirmen.

"Especially in the last quarter, when we played good defence and we stopped them.

"Our main goal is to now win every remaining game in the group," added the guard.

Lara Sanders, another Turkey national team star, powered Agu Spor Kulubu to a precious victory in their quest to achieve a coveted top four finish.

The center came up with 22 points as her team inflicted more travel misery on Tango Bourges with a 77-73 victory in Kayseri.

BK Imos Brno pushed hard for their first win of the season and had a chance of attaining it thanks to 24 points from Katerina Hindrakova. However they found the mesmerising 21 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals of Jamaican guard Maurita Reid too much as eventually they fell 79-71 at Energa Torun, who collected their first win in seven games.

Meanwhile, Nadezhda took a major step towards the post-season with an impressive 84-74 triumph against the in-form Beretta Famila Schio in Orenburg.

Dynamo Kursk may have racked up plenty of wins during their rookie EuroLeague Women campaign, but Serbia national team leader Jelena Milovanovic is far from content.

The Russian rookies returned to winning ways and moved to a 7-2 record in Group A after shutting down Good Angels Kosice in the last quarter to take a 66-52 home win and guarantee a Play Off spot.

But Milovanovic is adamant her team still has some way to go if they want to make a splash during the business end of the season.

"It is the second game in a row when we started badly and we have to figure it out, because we are coming towards the end of the season and playing better teams," warned the forward.

"We have to start better and make the games easier on us.

"We can't let it happen one more time, because we play against Prague and UMMC in the next games and they won't allow us to come back in the third quarter."

The chances of Kursk catching UMMC at the top of the standings are fading after their Russian rivals issued a statement of their intent to finish top of the pile by showcasing their offensive armoury against Wisla Can-Pack.

They amassed the highest score in the tournament so far with an eye-bulging 106-63 success as Sandrine Gruda completed a fine double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, with Diana Taurasi adding 19 points and six assists.

There was little doubt that the biggest result of another action packed EuroLeague Women night came in the Czech capital, where Galatasaray took another step towards the recovery of their undulating season with a stunning 72-43 win at ZVVZ USK Prague.

Incredibly, the visitors replicated the 29-point road win which their rivals collected earlier in the season, and it was Jelena Dubljevic who haunted her former team with a game-high 18 points.

The alarm bells are now ringing for Prague, whose offensive woes meant they slumped to a fourth loss in five games.
