Van2017 3x3 Semi-Finals overflowing with Melanesia talent

PORT VILA – After three massive days of competition, the Van2017 Pacific Mini Games 3x3 Semi-Final matchups have been set.

Of the four men’s and four women’s teams left in the competition, five hail from the Melanesia region. In the men, Fiji, Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea are looking to take home the gold for the Melanesia region. They will not only have to contend with each other but also a Polynesian rival in Samoa.

Samoa will take on Fiji for their place in tomorrow’s final. In their first matchup of the event, Samoa took out the win 16-11 and with an injury to Fiji’s Esala ‘Sonny’ Banuve, they will need to put on a stellar performance. The beauty of sport, but especially 3x3 is that there are no guaranteed victories, it’s anybody’s game.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) will be out for revenge against the Solomon Islands who gave them their first loss of the event earlier today. Can PNG hold on for two more games with only three players and take out the gold? Or will the Solomon Islands repeat their effort from today and take away that chance? Make sure you follow the score here tomorrow to find out.

Over on the women’s side, we find an all-Melanesia matchup with PNG taking on host nation Vanuatu. There’s no love lost between these two teams as PNG defeated Vanuatu 15-6 in front of their home fans on day two. With a finals spot and medals on the line, the home crowd will be up and about to support their team – time will tell if this can help them overcome a talented PNG line-up.

Big experience verses big heart as Nauru look to topple a seasoned 3x3 team in the Cook Islands. Nauru and the Cook Islands may have a similar population size but their experience in 3x3 is very different. Two members of the Cook Islands team were a part of the 2016 FIBA 3x3 World Championships in China. The Cook Islands will rely on this experience to shine through in the clutch moments and make their way to the final. Nauru is looking to spoil their party and snatch their chance at gold.

It’s going to be an action-packed day of 3x3 action in Port Vila, make sure you stay up to date with the latest scores on the Van2017 FIBA 3x3 event page and find out who will be crowned the Van2017 3x3 Champions.
