USA's World Cup trio of Irving, Rose and Thompson lighting up NBA

CLEVELAND (FIBA Basketball World Cup/NBA) - With each passing day, evidence builds that the United States side which romped to the title at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup was among the most talented in the history of the competition.

From the 37-point third quarter explosion by sharpshooter Klay Thompson last Friday, followed by Derrick Rose's impressive game-winner on Tuesday and Kyrie Irving's career-high 55 point on Wednesday, the past several days have been simply amazing for three of USA Basketball's finest.

Since the performance of World Cup MVP Irving happened most recently, soak up the highlights which includes a game-winning three-ball over Nicolas Batum with 6.4 seconds to go.

For those who saw the 22-year-old Irving light up the World Cup Final with 26 points against Serbia - a game in which he nailed all six of his shots from long range - Wednesday's effort against the Portland Trail Blazers would have brought back memories.

In the USA's 129-92 title triumph on 14 September, Irving had his best outing of the tournament.

Similar to Irving, Rose hit a clutch shot to lift the Chicago Bulls to a 113-111 overtime triumph on Tuesday against the Golden State Warriors.

Rose had 30 points and this was the basket that everyone was talking about after the contest.

What made the shot all the more impressive was that his USA teammate Thompson was guarding him. He finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds in the losing cause.

The USA's second-leading scorer at the World Cup at 12.7 points per game, Thompson operates in the Golden State backcourt with another of his country's national team stars, Stephen Curry.

The 24-year-old Thompson made jaws drop with his 52-point night in a 126-101 triumph over the Sacramento Kings.

All he did was electrify the Golden State crowd with 37 points in the third quarter.

How remarkable was that?

It was the most points ever scored in one quarter of a league game and he set the record by hitting all 13 of his field goal attempts in the period, including makes on all nine of his attempts from three-point range.

Thompson's teammates could see they he was in his rhythm and kept getting him the ball.

"They just kept wanting to see the show," Thompson said. "That's what they kept telling me."

The previous record of 33 points in a single quarter was shared by George "The Iceman" Gervin and Carmelo Anthony.

Gervin's accomplishment is held in high as there was no three-point line when he pulled off the feat in the second quarter of a loss to the New Orleans Jazz, on 9 April 1978.

Remember, the World Cup has been a launchpad to greatness for many players over the years.

Rose was the MVP of the 2010-11 NBA season after helping the USA capture the title at the 2010 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Turkey.

It's going to be fun watching other World Cup stars play the rest of this season.
