USA coach Miller to take close look at U17 world champs for U19s

COLORADO SPRINGS (2015 FIBA U19 World Championship) - New United States head coach Sean Miller has nominated 11 players with an international title to his preliminary 24-man roster for the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship

Miller, who just recently took over as U19 coach after previously designated coach Billy Donovan stepped down to become the NBA Oklahoma City Thunder head coach, invited three members of the title-winning 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship team, getting commitments from Isaiah Briscoe, Jalen Brunson and Allonzo Trier

A number of the stars from last summer's side - for which Miller was an assistant under Donovan - declined to play after having declared for the 2015 NBA Draft. They include Stanley Johnson, Tyus Jones, Myles Turner and Justice Winslow

Miller will use the training camp to look at seven players who won the crown at the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship - Tyus Battle, Terrance Ferguson, Harry Giles, Josh Jackson, Diamond Stone, Caleb Swanigan and Jayson Tatum.

The other player with a championship was Seventh Woods, who helped the USA with the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship - along with Ferguson, Giles, Jackson, Stone and Tatum.

Those 11 players will compete at a training camp with 13 others who have not represented the USA in FIBA competitions yet. The training camp begins on 13 June with two practices a day. Finalists are expected to be announced on 15 June, with the final roster to be selected prior to the team’s departure for the U19 Worlds taking place in Heraklion (Crete), Greece from 27 June-5 July.

"It should be looked upon as a tremendous honor to be selected to try out for this team because the competition is so strong," said Jim Boeheim, the Chairman of the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Committee, which is responsible for selecting the players and coaches for the team.

"Our committee does a great job identifying players who will represent our country in international competition. We know that even in the training camp, the competition will be fierce."

Among the 13 players battling for their first USA experience are 10 who spent last season playing college basketball in the U.S. They are: Justin Bibbs (Virginia Tech), Brekkott Chapman (Utah), Vince Edwards (Purdue), Riley LaChance (Vanderbilt), Silas Melson (Gonzaga), Chinanu Onauku (Louisville), Eric Paschall (Villanova), L.J. Peak (Georgetown), Malik Pope (San Diego State) and Thomas Welsh (UCLA).

Juwan Evans will attend Oklahoma State next season while T.J. Leaf has committed to Arizona, where U19 boss Sean Miller is the head coach. And the remaining player is Malik Monk, who has yet to decide on a college.

The USA have been drawn into Group A along with Croatia, Egypt and Iran
