USA, Argentina secure spots in 2020 Olympics, half the Tokyo field set

SHENZHEN (China) - Half of the field for the 2020 Olympics is set as reigning champions United States and Argentina punched their tickets for Tokyo after advancing to the Quarter-Finals of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019.

USA defeated Brazil in the final Second Round game to remain undefeated in China and take top honors in Group K and set up a final eight date with France, who finished second in Group L. Argentina, for their part, finished atop Group I and will face Serbia in the Quarter-Finals.

By reaching the last eight, USA and Argentina confirmed qualification for the Olympics as the two top-ranked Americas teams in the World Cup. The Americas teams joined Australia, Iran and Nigeria in booking spots in next summer's Olympics as the top ranked Oceanian, Asian and African sides, respectively at the World Cup.

The sixth team already in the field is hosts Japan.

United States have now reached their 18th Olympics in 19 editions - missing only the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. The Americans have won the last three Olympic gold medals and 15 golds in total. Argentina reached their eighth Olympics in total and their fifth in a row, dating back to winning the gold medal in 2004 in Athens.

There are still two Olympics places to be filled at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019, going to the top two ranked national teams from Europe. The teams still in the running are Czech Republic, France, Poland, Serbia and Spain.

The remaining four spots in the men's basketball event at the Olympics will be filled by the four winners of next year's FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, which will feature six teams each.

Teams can qualify for the Olympic Qualifying Tournaments via the FIBA Basketball World Cup, with the first 13 slots already confirmed.

Additionally, two teams from each region - Africa, Americas, Asia and Europe - will be awarded places in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament according to the FIBA World Ranking presented by NIKE.
