Vairo was elected in the national assembly held at full capacity in the Uruguayan Basketball Federation headquarters and received 106 votes, including 65 votes from the national league, 30 from the promotion league and 11 from the DTA and Interior of the country.

A new Central Board was also elected with Dr Alvaro Abdala as Vice President, Dr Oscar Grecco as Secretary General, Fernando Coelho as Treasurer and Cr Hugo Avegno as the Honorary Accountant.

"At this moment I am overwhelmed with emotion about being elected President of the federation. Also with so much support from the clubs and that fills me with pride," Vairo said to Basquetcaliente.com.

"We have a four-year plan that needs to be introduced to our clubs so that they become involved and the basketball community moves toward achieving joint objectives. The competition system for the senior men's national team will change, we will be able to have our team playing at home and that is a big challenge that we must face and be successful at together."

Vairo, who is also the Uruguayan national league President, takes over from Castillo who presided over the national federation for 12 years.
