United States, Colombia and Brazil advanced to the women's basketball Semi-Finals in Lima 2019

LIMA (Peru) - USA, Colombia, and Brazil qualified to the Semi-Finals of the Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Pan American Games 2019, after finishing the second day of competition undefeated.

USA (2-0) secured their spot at the next instance of the competition following a 103-55 win over Virgin Islands (0-2).

Taylor Mikesell, with 16 goals and Michaela Onyenwere, with 15, led the USA attack, which had six players scoring double-digits.

The USA dominated from the get-go and won the first ten minutes of the game 34-10. North Americans maintained their dominance during the rest of the game.

Colombia (2-0) qualified to the Semi-Finals out of Group B, after defeating Argentina (0-2) due to a game jersey error, which made it impossible for the game to take place. Colombia won the game 20-0.

For its part, Brazil (2-0) defeated Puerto Rico (1-1) 64-58, to remain as undefeated leader of Group A.

The Amazon team fell to a 26-13 disadvantage after Puerto Rico mounted a 12-0 run in the first three minutes of the second quarter but recovered spectacularly with five three-pointers to finish the first half with a 19-5 run and go to the half with a 32-31 advantage.

At the start of the third period, Brazil remained dominant with good defense and scoring from all sides. Puerto Rico closed the gap to 4 points with 44 seconds left on the scoreboard; However, Brazil resisted with two free throws by Raphaella Monteiro, with 8.6 seconds, to secure the victory.

De Souza and Clarissa Dos Santos, with 12 points each, led the Brazilian offensive, while Monteiro added 11. By the Puerto Ricans, Jennifer O'Neill contributed 23 points and Gwathmey with 15.

In the other game from Group A, Canada (1-1) categorically defeated Paraguay (0-2) 90-64.

After a hard-fought first half (41-35), the Canadians, in the second half adjusted and were completely superior with a 49-29. The northern team dominated the rebounds overwhelmingly 65-21 and scored 20 points in second chances.

The 12 players of the Canada squad managed to score. The starters Samantha Hill, with 14 points and Jamie Scott with 12, were the best. For Paraguay, which was left out of the medal fight, Paola Ferrari stood out again with 28 points.

This Thursday, on the last day of the Group Phase, Argentina will face the Virgin Islands, the United States will then face Colombia, Paraguay will take on Brazil and Canada will face Brazil to determine the last spot at the Semi-Finals.
