UniCEUB, San Martin go for glory in Liga Sudamericana Grand Finale

BRASILIA (2015 DIRECTV Liga Sudamericana) - The days of the Liga Sudamericana Final Four are no more.

Instead of packing everything into a few days and allowing one club to have home-court advantage, organizers of the 2015 DIRECTV Liga Sudamericana have set up a best-of-three, winner-take-all climax and the fun tips off on Thursday night in Brasilia.

UniCEUB BRB will host San Martin de Corrientes in Game 1 before the series shifts to Argentina for Game 2 (9 December) and, if necessary, Game 3 (10 December).

In a competition dominated over the years by Brazil and Argentina, it's no surprise the two countries have again put teams in the title showdown.

What is a surprise is that San Martin, playing in a continental competition for the first time, have made it to the championship series.

Along the way, they have won one big game after another, including their last one in Venezuela when they beat Guaros de Lara to clinch first place in Semi-Final Round Group F.

That Guaros team included several national team players of Venezuela and had the coach of the FIBA Americas Championship winning side, too, in Nestor 'Che' Garcia.

San Martin were just too good on the deciding night of Group F.

UniCEUB are a major hurdle for San Martin to clear.

This is the club that won the competition in 2010 and 2013, and finished runners-up in 2012.

"We will face the best team in recent years," Coach Sebastian Gonzalez said, "one that is playing very good basketball, both on offense and defense.

"They have a lot of personality, showing it in the Liga Sudamericana games and the beginning of the Brazilian League."

UniCEUB are led by long-time national team player Guilherme Giovanoni, a player that has been a standout in this season's competition.

The 35-year-old is averaging 17 points per game and shooting 40.9 percent (9 of 22) from 3-point range.

In the 77-75 win over Group E hosts Malvin that clinched a spot in the Final for UniCEUB, Guilherme led his team in scoring with 19 points.

How important has Guilherme been for UniCEUB in the Liga Sudamericana over the years?

He was MVP of the competition when they won it in both 2010 and 2013.

Guilherme will know this is an opportunity, too, to show he is still at his best and can help Brazil next year when they host the Olympics.

He has had an incredibly long career with Brazil, starting with the 2002 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Guilherme has appeared in every major event for them since.

That includes four FIBA Basketball World Cups, one Olympics (2012) and seven FIBA Americas Championships.

As valuable a player as Guilherme is, teammate Lucas Cipolini says the squad is most successful when not overly reliant on one player.

"Our strength in this tournament has been team play, especially in the aspect of the defense," he said.

Henrique Macia Alves Da Cruz revealed himself to be a real menace on defense for UniCEUB in the Semi-Final Round.

"We also have a minimum of 10 players that can enter the court, perform well and maintain the power of the team, Cipolini said.

"That's has a lot of value, especially in today's basketball, which is very physical."

San Martin also have the strength of team play because nearly all of their players have shown the ability to make important plays, too.

From Jeremiah Wood and Larry O'Bannon Jr to Argentina international Matias BortolinMiguel Gerlero and more, all the players have been big-time contributors to the San Martin cause.

They have arrived in Brazil relaxed, confident and determined.

Both teams, rest assured, are going to pull out all stops to achieve glory.

"We will start in Brazil and that will be the most important game in the history of our club," Gonzalez said.
