Teammates raise a toast for Torrens

ISTANBUL (FIBA World Championship for Women) - Alba Torrens was the obvious toast of the Spanish basketball movement at the Fenerbahce Arena on Saturday night.

The UMMC Ekaterinburg forward delivered 28 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished out 6 assists in leading the EuroBasket Women 2013 winners to their first-ever Final appearance at a FIBA World Championship for Women.

A majority of those points came at the start of the fourth quarter when Spain blew open the tight contest to eventually cruise home to 66-56 victory.

Afterwards, praise for Torrens poured from all quarters.

"I knew she would deliver for us today," said power forward Sancho Lyttle, who had 18 points on an impressive 7 of 13 shooting in the paint.

Alba had this look right through the day. I knew it was going to be her day. - Lyttle

"The first thing she told us as soon as she woke up this morning was: 'Look girls, we have to two more games to win'.

"I just had to latch on to her shots and go for the rebounds," added the 31-year-old, who also pulled down a dozen rebounds.

Lyttle believes that playing in front of a large crowd that was against Spain brought the best out of the team.

"First off, it was a great feeling to play in front of a full stadium. And we were determined to not let the opportunity (of winning a Semi-Final) go," she explained.

Lyttle, incidentally, scored the exact same number of points when Spain beat Turkey last year en route to their European title.

"I guess it's written my stars," she chuckled. "But we are winning as well."

Alba has always delivered on the big moments. We can always look up to her. - Palau

Guard Laia Palau too had nothing but praise for Torrens.

"We missed a lot of shots in the first half. But once Alba caught fire, there was nothing to challenge us," said the ZVVZ USK Praha player.
