Spanish ace Palau still feeling youthful

ANKARA (FIBA World Championship for Women) - Laia Palau may be one of the oldest players at the FIBA World Championship for Women, but the Spanish point guard is feeling as fresh as ever.

As with other veteran playmakers such as Sue Bird and Adriana Pinto, stepping out in Turkey has handed Palau a fourth appearance for at the event and confirmed her impressive longevity and sparkling resume at the top level.

Although when Amaya Valdemoro and Elisa Aguilar both retired in the wake of the EuroBasket Women triumph last year, the 35-year-old confessed to having felt her age.

When Amaya and Elisa left the team, it made me realise how old I was. - Palau

"But now the coach has brought in young players like Leticia (Romero) and Leonor (Rodriguez) it hasn't made me feel even older - but it is actually making me feel like I am 18 again."

Having young players come into the team is giving Palau a renewed focus as she takes primary responsibility for their integration into the senior team.

She also has something in common with the duo, since she also debuted at the FIBA World Championship  - way back in 2002.

"I know from my own experiences that it can be difficult when it is your first time, but I think that they are ready," insisted the Barcelona native.

This was always the plan, to integrate players for the future. - Palau

"Even though they might not play many minutes, it's an important introduction for them."

So far at least, the fusion and blend of experience of youth has proven a fruitful one.

On Tuesday, Spain will face fellow unbeaten side Czech Republic for the top position in Group A and an automatic Quarter-Final spot.

Palau knows the Czech players well, since she spent all last season in the capital at ZVVZ USK Prague who she took to the EuroLeague Women Final Eight.

"Maybe I can add some small details for our coaches," said the 1.78m guard.

"But we all know each other very well and I don't think the Czech Republic have too much new stuff - so it will probably be a typically hard game for both teams."
