Serbia show nerves of steel to hold off Cuba and reach Last Eight

ISTANBUL (FIBA World Championship for Women) - Serbia showed enough calm and composure down the stretch to eke out an 86-79 win over a doughty Cuban outfit and complete the Quarter-Final line-up at the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women.

Serbia, playing in their first-ever FIBA World Championship for Women, will take on hosts Turkey - a team they lost to in the Third-Place Game at EuroBasket Women 2013.

Ana Dabovic led the Serbian charge with 21 points and 5 rebounds, Jelena Milovanovic came good at the crucial junctures for her 17 points, while Milica Dabovic added 14.

Marlen Cepeda's 18 points and 8 rebounds paced Cuba. Yamara Amargo, who picked up her fourth foul in the third quarter but played much of the rest of the way, added 17 points.

Milovanovic sank her only three-pointer of the night to put Serbia ahead, 63-62, at the start of the final period. The teams traded the lead and the score was tied on several occasions before Tijana Adjukovic scored four points to put the Serbs up 73-69 with 4:03 left to play.

Cuba got within two on three occasions in the final minutes, but Serbia secured the win from the free-throw line courtesy of Milica Dabovic and Dajana Butulija.

"This is the biggest moment in Serbian women's basketball," said Serbia coach Marina Maljkovic.

"We have worked very hard for this. And we deserve this."

An 11-1 run starting midway through the opening period - during which Tamara Radocaj's lone free-throw kept Serbia from drawing a blank - had Cuba in the driving seat.

Cepeda took care of the business in the paint while Leidus Oquendo found the range from the perimeter as the 2013 FIBA Americas champions finished the first quarter with a 23-16 lead.

Serbia fought back with a 10-2 spurt as Milovanovic and Ana Dabovic did much of the damage to get them back in the game.

Milica Dabovic then played the lead role in Serbia's run of six unanswered points,  helping them as they looked like they were pulling away. However, Amargo buried a three-pointer that got Cuba within 42-39 as the teams headed into the locker-room at halftime.

There was little to separate both teams in the third quarter as Cuba edged in front 62-60 at the end of period, setting the stage for a hard-fought final frame when Serbia managed to hold their own.
