Samoa Jamboree Development Success

In just its second year, the Samoa Jamboree has provided aspiring basketballers and officials with the opportunity to further their development on and off the basketball court.

With the support of FIBA Foundation, the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Police, Red Cross, Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee, Samoa Sports Facilities Authority and TV3, the Jamboree provided participants with a fun-filled day of basketball.

“This year we wanted to focus on promoting and supporting young Samoan basketballers with their skill development while playing basketball and personal development outside of basketball,” Samoa Basketball Federation President, Pauga Talalelei Pauga said.

“We also wanted to increase the skill level of our young coaches, referees and table officials which is why we conducted specific training two weeks prior to the event so they could be involved with the Jamboree.”

Incorporating training for coaches, referees and officials prior to the event proved a master stroke with more hands-on deck for the Jamboree.  Blending the two elements provided participants with access to up-skilled support staff who had the ability to teach correct rules, requirements and procedures.

“The young players began to understand the importance of not only playing sport but also playing by the rules and having a healthy lifestyle to compliment everything,” Pauga said.

Playing sports is not just about playing games, but also involves other factors such as living a healthy lifestyle, eating the right food and showing friendship.
