Quarter-Final field set at U20 European Championship

LIGNANO SABBIADORO (2015 U20 European Championship Div. A) - The last four Quarter-Final berths that remained up for grabs at the U20 European Championship met their rightful owners on Wednesday night, upon the conclusion of Second Round action in Lignano Sabbiadoro.

Latvia claimed third place and Belgium took fourth in Group E, while the Czech Republic and Lithuania earned third and fourth spot, respectively, in Group F.

In Friday's Quarter-Finals, Serbia will take on Lithuania, France will go up against the Czech Republic, Spain will face Belgium while Turkey will do battle with Latvia.

In Group E, Latvia needed a win to reach the Last Eight and came back from a 15-point deficit at half-time to snatch a 75-66 triumph over Belgium.

Rolands Smits led the Latvian charge with a game-high 26 points, also adding five rebounds.

Serbia held France to only 21 first-half points and walked away with a 64-53 win in the game which determined first place in the group.

Rade Zagorac, with 14 points, together with Dejan Davidovac who had 12, paced the Serbian offence.

Italy meanwhile returned to winning ways with a 75-64 success over Israel and finished in fifth place in Group E, ahead of the Israelis.

Simone Fontecchio propelled the tournament hosts to the win with 17 points, four boards and three assists.

In Group F, Lithuania recovered from an 11-point second-quarter deficit to prevail 70-57 over Ukraine and waited nervously for the conclusion of Wednesday action in the group.

Domantas Sabonis came up with a tournament-record 28 rebounds and added 18 points in a monster double-double for the Lithuanians.

To the delight of Lithuania, a few hours later Germany registered a 74-71 win over Czech Republic, falling short of the nine-point winning margin they needed to earn a spot in the Quarter-Finals.

Maximilian Ugrai and Christian Sengfelder had 14 points apiece in Germany's pyrrhic victory.

Meanwhile, Spain and Turkey clashed for first place in Group F, with the Spaniards using a rock-solid defensive effort to register a 57-48 victory.

Juan Hernagomez finished with 15 points and eight rebounds to pace the Spanish side.

Classification Round for 13th-20th places
Poland and Slovenia will join Russia and Great Britain in the battle for 13th place which translates into maintaining Division A status, while Greece and Bosnia and Herzegovina were relegated on Wednesday.

Russia defeated Great Britain 80-73 behind a 25-point, five-rebound showing by Ilia Popov and claimed first spot in Group G.

Croatia cruised to an 81-49 victory over Bulgaria as Goran Filipovic and Luka Bozic contributed 14 points apiece, to claim third place.

In Group H meanwhile, Greece claimed the 15-point margin they wanted in a 75-56 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the back of 12 points from Antreas Christoldoulou.

It proved of no consequence however, as Poland held off Slovenia 58-50 in the late game, thanks to a 14-point showing by Igor Wadowski, and pipped the Greeks to a top-two finish in the group.
