Online DSS and statistician's webinars well-attended across Asia

BEIRUT (Lebanon) - Amid the COVID-19 situation that has affected the world of basketball, FIBA Regional Office - Asia continues to keep the basketball community and the National Federations active by holding a series of online workshops and webinars.

The series of workshops tipped off on Friday 24 April with a DSS online webinar, followed by a statisticians' online webinar, which has been positively met by National Federations and participants.

The FIBA statistician's webinar was held on 27 April and was well-attended by nearly 400 participants from 23 countries across Asia. The statisticians were briefed on the FIBA Statistician's Manual in detail via the GoToMeeting software.

"It is important for all of us to stay active during these difficult times in order to be ready to get back right into action whenever the situation allows us to," said Hagop Khajirian, FIBA Executive Director - Asia. "These webinars and online workshops organized by the FIBA Regional Office – Asia aim to accomplishing that target."

Statistics play a large part in building a healthy and productive environment to develop the game of basketball. Therefore, keeping the game statisticians updated and in shape for duty through these times was important for all participating National Federations.

"Being aware of the key role they hold in competitions' management, consistently tutoring them and improving their skills becomes of paramount importance, no matter what circumstances we are in," added Khajirian.

Aside from this webinar, the Regional Office also hosted a separate session concerning the digital score sheet (DSS). The online webinar was also well-attended up to full capacity, so it was decided that there would be three other webinars scheduled in the near future for each separate subzone.

The DSS was implemented successfully at all games in the first window of the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers and received positively with the statisticians. The system was targeted to be a must in all basketball events Asia-wide as of January 2020 and is now available for all National Federations to use.
