Newly elected Tanzanian Basketball Federation looking to restore glory

DAR ES SALAAM - Following a successful election last December, newly elected Tanzanian Basketball Federation (TBF) aim to restore their glory days.

Currently ranked as 32nd African team in the FIBA World Ranking presented by Nike, Tanzania have struggled to qualify for continental championships in recent years.

While Tanzania men's team last featured at FIBA AfroBasket in 1974, their women's counterpart last competed against Africa's top teams at FIBA Women's AfroBasket 1997 in neighboring Kenya where they lost all their four games.

Nevertheless, according to the local press, Tanzanian Basketball Federation General Secretary Michael Mwita feels a new era is about to happen.

"We want to do better in international competitions and restore our glory in this sport,” Mwita said.

TBF is currently led by its former vice-president Phares Magesa, who received 23 votes in last December's election against three votes obtained by his closest challenger, John Bandile, who failed to retain his presidential post of the federation.

"After the general election, the newly elected leaders are determined to do their works diligently for the growth of basketball in the country,” Mwita continued.
