New Impulse for Mini Basketball in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (Mexico) - Following their participation in the FIBA Foundation’s Mini Basketball Virtual Seminar, the Mexican Basketball Federation, ADEMEBA, has given a new impulse to Mini Basketball in their country.

Lito Vargas and Luis Jaime were chosen to take part in the Seminar and have already started enhancing the Mini Basketball movement within their Federation.

They first analyzed the status of Mini Basketball in the country and conducted a survey among more than 200 Mini Basketball educators. As a result, the need to create a commission to help further Mini Basketball and regulate activities was determined.

The ADEMEBA Federation and its President Dr. Modesto Robledo took action and created the National Commission for the Development of Youth in Mexico. The President and the Board of directors appointed Lic. Lito Vargas as the FIBA Foundation contact. He was also put in charge of Mini Basketball in all the states of Mexico.

Mexico has 32 states and its population is of 115 million inhabitants making basketball activity very broad and requiring sustained work. The commission is made up of six experienced educators. They appeared before the state presidents and announced their action plan: to create and streamline education for all Mini Basketball stakeholders and organize continuous programming.

The 2019 Americas Mini Basketball Festival in Sonora, Mexico had set a precedent in Mexican Mini Basketball. Shortly after, the arrival of the pandemic favored the online training of educators from all over the country. Face-to-face classes and meetings began later.

The path that has begun is one of inclusion and empathy. Mexico consolidating its institutions with the FIBA Foundation, based on the Basketball For Good concept.

It will be a priority to use the methodology of fun game-based learning to improve the quality of Mini Basketball in Mexico. They will also use basketball to address the sustainable development goals established by the UN in all club activities and in sports competitions.

“We are grateful to FIBA and its Foundation; we will make sure that the countries of the COCABA sub zone have a solid and structured base to shape a broad Mini Basketball movement. The youth must remain at the center of all activities,” explains Mario Méndez, president of the Central American Basketball Confederation.
