Mum's a Hero making a difference in PNG

PAPUA NEW GUINEA -- Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea's (BFPNG) outreach program Mum's a Hero is making waves across the country's capital in Port Moresby with another stellar week of teaching the program in the Papua New Guinea Power Compound in Hohola last July 20.

"This program started in 2017 and our message is to raise the awareness in healthy living through sports. BFPNG goes to different communities every week to help inform Women about family planning while also discussing the eradication of Tuberculosis," said BFNPG Executive Officer Stephen Damien.

"Everyone involved had a great time in the program we had 24 women/girls ages 15-47 that attended our event this week,

FIBA Oceania Development Manager Annie Le Fleur who is currently in Yap, Micronesia for the Micro Games 2018 is genuinely ecstatic with the weekly Mum's A Hero program of BFPNG.

"PNG needs more of these programs to help empower women in the country. I am very proud the work they have done and I believe that the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea will continue to make a difference," said La Fleur who was born in Papua New Guinea.

BFPNG and Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation will be hosting monthly Mum's A Hero programs at different locations in Port Moresby until January 2019.

Damien shared that BFPNG's partner, Business For Health is also delighted with the program that aims to empower in Papua New Guinea.

"Business for Health speaker Marie Stoppes talked about family planning and they were very pleased with the outcome with more women and girls attending our programs," shared Damien.

"Basketball's rising popularity in PNG is a great tool to increase health and welfare awareness of our people and we are glad that everyone is making a contribution," he added.

Mum's A Hero is made possible by the support of FIBA's Foundation, International Basketball Federation funding through the Pacific Sports Partnership Program.
