Maciulis lifts Lithuania as Czechs make history

LILLE (EuroBasket 2015) - Lithuania advanced to the Quarter-Finals of EuroBasket 2015, thanks to an inspirational display from Jonas Maciulis in Lille on Sunday.

The Real Madrid forward did it all as he guided Lithuania to a dramatic 85-81 Round of 16 success against Georgia.

The momentum appeared to shift one way then the other down the stretch, Lithuania building a seven-point buffer late on before Georgia hit back to within a single point with 37 seconds remaining following back-to-back three-pointers.

But Maciulis came up with the game's decisive score, converting a three-pointer in the face of his defender to restore the Lithuania lead to four points with 11 seconds to play, before adding a pair from the line to ice the victory.

He finished with 34 points on 11-of-13 shooting, as well as 6 rebounds and 4 steals, drawing the praise of coach Jonas Kazlauskas.

"Maciulis was great all the time he was on the court," said Kazlauskas. "Great on both defense and offense.

"Today, for sure he was our best player. I hope that in the next game we will find somebody else. We need more players to help."

Alessandro Gentile helped Italy to reach their second straight EuroBasket Quarter-Final, where they will meet Lithuania.

The Italians eased to an 82-52 defeat of Israel - despite losing Andrea Bargnani to injury late in the first half - as Gentile went for 27 points and five rebounds while drawing eight fouls and limiting Omri Casspi's offensive impact.

Czech Republic are among the last eight teams at EuroBasket for the first time as an independent country following a ruthless display against Croatia.

Ronen Ginzburg's side were at their high-octane best as they scored 36 points from Croatia's 24 turnovers to triumph 80-59 and secure a historic Quarter-Final place.

As he has done since the first day of competition, Tomas Satoransky orchestrated the Czech offence in masterful fashion, finishing with figures of 10 points, 11 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals in more than 36 minutes of play.

"The heart of the players, the commitment of the players, that was the difference today," said Ginzburg. "It's a celebration day for basketball.

"To beat Croatia, to beat them the way we did, it's great for Czech basketball. It's great for us."

Serbia stand between the Czechs and the Semi-Finals after Aleksandar Djordjevic's side found its scoring touch in the second half to fend off Finland despite a slow start.

The Serbs made 12 shots in a row - including four three-pointers - to open the fourth quarter as they pulled away for a 94-81 success behind 27 points on 11-of-12 shooting from Miroslav Raduljica.
