Korea consider KBL champion Taeyong Moon for Asian campaign

SEOUL (2015 FIBA Asia Championship) - There's some of the old and some of the new in Korea's preliminary squad for the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship.

Jahak Yoo, who coached the team last year at the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain and the Asian Games in Incheon, will have 24 players to choose from before heading off to Changsha-Hunan, China, where the Asia Championship will be held from 23 September-3 October.

Among them is someone with a last name that has a familiar ring to it.

Taejong Moon (aka Jared Stevenson), who dazzled at times at Spain 2014, is 39 and the only player from last year's team not in the preliminary squad.

He will be sorely missed.

However, his brother, Taeyong (aka Gregory Stevenson), is named in the squad and Korean basketball fans know all about him.

Taeyong, a forward, captured the title this season with national team coach Yoo and Ulsan Mobis Phoebus.

The Moon (or Stevenson) brothers grew up in North Carolina and played American college basketball for the Richmond Spiders in Virginia before embarking on their professional careers.

Ulsan Mobis Phoebus point guard Dongguen Yang, is in the preliminary squad.

The 33-year-old featured at Spain 2104.

Joosung Kim, a 35-year-old center who competed for Korea at both the 1998 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Greece and in last year’s edition, is on the preliminary list.

Some expected him to retire after last year but he will now battle for a spot in the team that is going to try and qualify for the Rio de Janeiro Games.

The Wonju Dongbu Promy pivot spoke with immense pride about his experience with the Korea team over the years in an interview with FIBA.com back in February.

His experience could prove to be an asset for the Korea as they set out to win the title that would qualify the team for Brazil.

It's not going to be easy considering there is only one ticket to the Rio de Janeiro Games at the FIBA Asia Championship. - Joosung Kim

"As I saw the possibility and our potential at the 2014 Asian Games, I believe nothing is impossible unless we lose hope and passion for the Olympics," Joosung Kim said to FIBA.com.

Korea have included former NBA draft pick Seungjin Ha.

The 2.21m center last played for Korea at the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship.

Ha, 29, averaged 12.6 points and 9.8 rebounds this season for a KCC Egis team that finished one place off the bottom of the KBL standings.

As for some of the youngsters, Lee Jonghyun (21) and Kim Jongkyu (23) are the best known.

Each have been with the senior national team set-up for a while and are among the leading players.

Korea are full of hope going into this season's competition.

They did not win a game at the World Cup in Gran Canaria but did show a lot of promise.

Despite their difficult World Cup campaign, Korea did not finish last year empty handed.

They returned home after Spain 2014, hosted the Asian Games and captured the gold medal in that competition.
